Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich Resigns After Backlash Over Support For Prop 8 Same-Sex Marriage Ban

No personal beliefs allowed in any company apparently…

CBS San Francisco: Mozilla Chief Executive Officer Brendan Eich has resigned his post after revelations of his prior support for California’s doomed same-sex marriage ban created a backlash among Mozilla employees.

Eich’s resignation also comes days after online dating site OkCupid.com began asking its customers not to use Mozilla’s Firefox browser to access the site.

Eich, who was named CEO of the Mountain View-based Mozilla last month, had come under fire for his 2008 donation of $1,000 to support Proposition 8 which has since been struck down.

After his ascension from chief technology officer to CEO, Mozilla employees criticized the move and publicly called on Eich to step down.

In a blog post Thursday, Mozilla Executive Chairwoman Mitchell Baker said the company was caught off guard by the extent of the backlash and announced Eich’s resignation:

Mozilla prides itself on being held to a different standard and, this past week, we didn’t live up to it. We know why people are hurt and angry, and they are right: it’s because we haven’t stayed true to ourselves.

We didn’t act like you’d expect Mozilla to act. We didn’t move fast enough to engage with people once the controversy started. We’re sorry. We must do better.

Baker’s post said the company supports equality for all and recognized employees have a wide diversity of views, and that the company “failed to listen, to engage, and to be guided by our community.”

Previously, Eich had published a blog post  addressing his previous stance, while promising to work with LGBT communities and expressing “my sorrow at having caused pain.”

So much for employees that “have a wide diversity of views”. It’s also not enough that Eich apologized and promised to work with homosexuals, nope. You either tow the homosexual agenda or are demonized for a personal belief (guess we can’t call that a diverse view). Welcome to the new Amerika.

  1. Given these ends, he should have just stuck to his guns, and told the satanists to scram. I’ve found that trying to “appease” these mentally and spiritually ill people, is like trying to appease a devil (which many of them likely have), and will never work. Better to stand one’s ground and fight for what is right and correct (Not that I would expect that from a CEO, however, unless it was for somethign corrupt) than to cower and be utilized as a doormat. This is what is commonly known as bullying, and criminal intimidation, He should Sue for discrimination, and defamation of character (though I doubt he will).

Thankfully there are other places to obtain good stable freeware that aren’t mozilla-based (try looking around techsupportalert.com) perhaps some will see this for what it is, and will stop supporting a company that clearly supports destroying what is sacred.

  2. You said it perfectly, DCG, exposing Mozilla as a company that does not respect or allow its employees to hold PERSONAL beliefs contrary to the Left’s. Yet more evidence of the Left’s intolerance, closed-mindedness, and hostility to diversity.

As Seumas noted above, Brendan Eich should not have apologized. What’s there to apologize for? I wouldn’t hire him because he has no courage of his convictions.

  3. Sooo….in his private life, he donated to a political cause he believes in, and he is driven out of his job??? That sure is tolerant. I was a live and let live person, but this type of asnine logic is changing my mind. Screw them. I will never use foxfire now, and any other business that makes people quit or get fired because of THEIR beliefs will not get a dime out of me. I can boycott too, even though I think it is stupid, but I guess we have to fight back to get the intolerant, evilness out of our lives.

    • He donated to the California proposition like 8 years ago? Heck, King O was against homo marriage back then. Why don’t they look up O’s history (of things he said during his first term) and demand that HE resign immediately?

Never had Firefox. Never wanted it. Never saw what the big attraction was.

Have to question how someone could be such a weak-kneed, lily-livered, spineless coward that even the mere thought of people — gasp! — SAYING MEAN THINGS would cause him to abandon a high-paying career and all he’s worked for.

A nation of pansies deserves to fall. Fortunately, America is not a nation of pansies, no matter what the mainstream propaganda outlets say or how often they say it. She is massive; she is waking up; and she is mightily pissed off. The next couple of years will be very interesting indeed.

Not only will they run you out of your job, they are going to put you on the wrong side of the grass.

We stand with Brendan and his right to support traditional marriage
We support Brendan Eich’s right to engage in civic life according to his beliefs and opinions, and his right to free speech and conviction. Brendan is guilty of nothing more than supporting traditional marriage.
We deplore okCupid and others attempt to harm Mozilla and its CEO for excersicing thier rights. We are tired of the Left’s tactics of intolerance and hypocrisy. The gay activists who have forced Brendan out of his company are intolerant bullies who hate free speech and a country that is free for everyone.

        • Eowyn, OK so I’m looking at a Drudge article and kinda copying and pasting.
So it seems this kinda started with

“Rarebit founders Hampton and Michael Catlin, a gay developer couple, pulled their software apps from Mozilla after Eich’s appointment. OkCupid.com, the online dating site, called for a boycott of Firefox. Some on Twitter who identified themselves as Mozilla employees called for Eich to resign”

It then goes on to say that Hampto Catlin.

“Even Rarebit’s Hampton Catlin said he had not anticipated the issue’s escalation and was saddened by Eich’s resignation.

“We absolutely believe people should be allowed to have personal opinions, but we also believe that we are allowed to disagree and to try and change someone’s mind by expressing our own personal story,” the Catlins said in a statement.

“We absolutely don’t believe that everyone who voted yes on Prop 8 is evil. In fact, we’re sure that most of them just didn’t understand the impact the law would have.””

Kinda what you are saying. Whether I believe him or not.

Eowyn, like I said a while ago.
There are no more pants in this Country
