Food stamps glitch is a glimpse into pandemonium to come

Under the Obama presidency, the number of Americans receiving food stamps (now called Electronic Benefits Transfer or EBT) exploded.

Today, one in five U.S. households are on food stamps. Worse still, we are taking two steps back for every step forward: For every new job that’s been created, two new recipients (let’s call them food-stampers) are added to the food stamps dole.

Given our exploding national debt and the impending bankruptcy of, first, Social Security Disability (in 2016!), then Social Security itself, followed by Medicare, anyone with half a brain whose head isn’t plunged deep in the River of Denial, knows that the morbidly obese Welfare State cannot be sustained.

Here’s a glimpse into the social pandemonium and mayhem when that day comes and the proverbial sh*t hits the fan.

Last Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, the EBT computer system went down in several states, including Louisiana. Reportedly, Xerox, a vendor for the EBT system, experienced a power outage while conducting a routine backup test in one of the company’s locations. While the system was back up Saturday night, it still was not functioning entirely properly in some areas.

Many stores turned away EBT shoppers, but not Wal-Mart stores in Springhill and Mansfield, Louisiana. Those stores allowed purchases on EBT cards even though, since the EBT system was down, the cards were not showing limits. The store managers called corporate Walmart, whose spokesman said to let the food-stampers use the cards anyway.

In other words: FREE STUFF!

What happened was not pretty.

The food-stampers went into a buying frenzy, stripping the stores’ shelves by the end of the day.

EBT run

Carolyn Roy reports for KSLA, Oct. 13, 2013, that food stamps recipients literally cleared the Walmart stores in Springhill and Mansfield. “Just about everything is gone, I’ve never seen it in that condition,” said Mansfield Walmart customer Anthony Fuller.

From 7 to 9 p.m., people were loading up their carts, but when the cards began showing limits again around 9, one woman was detained because she rang up a bill of $700.00 and only had 49 cents on her card. She was held by police until corporate Walmart said they wouldn’t press charges if she left the food.

The chaos ultimately required intervention from local police in Springhill and Mansfield who were brought in for crowd control. Springhill Police Chief Will Lynd confirms they were called in to help the employees at Walmart because there were so many people clearing off the shelves. He says Walmart was so packed, “It was worse than any black Friday” that he’s ever seen.

There were no arrests.

Lynd says at 9 p.m., when the cards came back online and it was announced over the loud speaker, people just left their carts filled to overflowing in the aisles and left.

Walmart employees could still be seen putting food from the carts away as late as Sunday afternoon. “I was just thinking, I’m so glad my mom doesn’t work here [Walmart] anymore, that’s the only thing I could think about, those employees working, that would have to restock all that stuff,” said O.J Evans who took cell phone video of the overflowing shopping carts at the Mansfield Walmart.

Walmart shoppers Stan and Judy Garcia said, “That’s plain theft, that’s stealing that’s all I got to say about it.”

Kayla Whaling, a spokesperson for Walmart, tells KSLA News 12 that the company was “fully engaged and monitoring the situation and transactions during the outage. We did make the decision to continue to accept EBT cards (and purchases on WIC and SNAP) during the outage so that they could get food for their families.”

A spokesperson for the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services (LA DSFS) says they take all allegations of potential fraud seriously, they are aware of the reports and they will be investigating. According to a notice posted on the LA DSFS website on Saturday:

“While transactional systems maintained by DCFS contractors may have been impacted by today’s outage, the systems that DCFS uses to track EBT card usage and identify fraud were still in place. DCFS vigorously investigates all fraud claims. Anyone suspected of fraudulently using public assistance benefits are investigated and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The public is encouraged to report cases of suspected SNAP fraud by calling the DCFS toll-free hotline at 1-888-LAHELP-U and selecting option 7 from the main menu or by visiting www.dcfs.la.gov/ReportFraud.”

  1. This is so sad that the situation got out of control. It brought out the very worse in some people and showed the greed and non caring for others. It was really a simple thing, all Walmart had to do, was put a one hundred dollar limit on each card and write down the numbers and amounts. At least each person could only steal so much.
A sad day, indeed for mankind.

    • It does make you wonder why Walmart did not try to mitigate its damages in this instance. Anyone with half a brain could see what was occurring…perhaps the media coverage of the aftermath was worth more than the loss?

  3. I was in a Walmart on Saturday evening. The loudspeaker repeatedly said to tell the cashier your method of payment if your bill was more than fifty dollars. I didn’t know it was about the food stamp program until I was home. I showed the cashier my bank card and she was very nonchalant and said it was fine. Then I suspected it was the food stamp program and confirmed it when I was online. The greed and stupidity of the shoppers in Louisiana is disheartening.

  4. Thank you Dr. Eowyn for this most revealing post. The behavior of such individuals is sickening and horrific! Walmart acted in good faith believing that their customers would also act in good faith. What greed and unconscionable behavior!

  6. We never worried about natural disasters, because our neighbors would not ever break down to looting. When we suffered a blizzard, people would help each other out.

But this bunch at Walmart is something entirely different.

  7. Somehow I feel this was no accident or power failure. Sounds like the plan out of the playbook of give them pain and suffering. This is what will happen when the potus finishes off our economy with lucifiercare. He create this mess of a welfare state. But now the hard working tax-payers are stuck with the bill.

  8. It’s easy to criticize these “food stampers” but it’s just a symptom of lousy government policy. The food shortages that are creeping up on us right now as we speak will cause the same feelings of desperation in those of us who are still eating pretty much enough and pretty much what we like. We are able to think more clearly because we’re not so deprived……………so let’s hope that the sequestration will be relaxed and that the Bowles Simpson cuts are not mandated as some would be planning to do. The signs are very onimous and this has to be busted right open. These same people who were helping themselves to anything and everything in Walmart are no different to the Banksters and Wall Streeters.
In fact they are utterly harmless if you think about them in comparison to the lovely vail in Dod Frank has in store for us unless we draw the line. Walmart needs to give some stuff away they have so much, shame on them for not having the idea to help poor people out anyway. At least Mickey D’s has a dollar menue. You can’t get much for a buck in Walmart.

  9. Thnk about it this way, imagine all those carts of stuff those people couldn’t take away with them, imagine if the Banksters and Wall Streeter were told that their BAIL IN was just not happening. Or if the debt ceiling limit had not been raised tonight, the Treasury Bonds would have had to be redeemed and they are so leveraged by now the people who are holding them would be dumping them just like the people had to dump all that food. I know that it’s embarrassing to see things like this happen here in the US but at the bottom of the totem pole there is such a struggle for survival going on it’s not funny. These people stand in line for everything most of the time…sometimes for many many hours on end. They are frustrated beyond their ability to behave rationally. Their creative juices have been zapped. Obamacare is designed to get rid of those “foodstampers” they are in the useless eaters catagory I guess that’s why the government was closed there for a moment. It is the Hitler TFour health care method which was pretty lethat. So they all have nooses around their necks anyway unless there’s a change in the situation really soon. Holy ghost Holy Ghost Holy Ghost move in this situation Fire…….
