What kind of insanity is this?
One of the first statements made by the newly elected president of post-Arab Spring Egypt is “Our capital shall be Jerusalem, Allah willing.” The last time I looked, Cairo is the capital of Egypt, not Jerusalem!
Morsi received up to 13.2 million votes out of just over 26 million, giving him approximately 51% of the vote. Morsi’s opponent, Ahmed Shafiq, the final Prime Minister under Hosni Mubarak, received 12.3 million votes. More than 800,000 ballots were invalidated. 95% of Egyptian Muslims in the United States voted for the Muslim Brotherhood. This leaves the fate of Egypt’s 12 million Coptic Christians in serious doubt. By Islmaic law, they can convert, pay the Jizya tax or die.
Upon winning, Morsi declared that very little would change but that “Our capital shall be Jerusalem, Allah willing.”
Born in Egypt, 60-year-old Mohammad Morsi received a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in engineering from Cairo University, and a PhD in engineering from the University of Southern California in 1982. He was an Assistant Professor at California State University, Northridge from 1982 to 1985. In 1985, he returned to Egypt to teach at Zagazig University. Two of his five children were born in California and are U.S. citizens by birth. Morsi was chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party founded by the Muslim Brotherhood after the 2011 Egyptian revolution until he resigned when he was elected president yesterday.
The Muslim Brotherhood wants a pan-Islamic (that is uniting all the world’s Muslim countries) theocratic state. From Wikipedia:
The Society of the Muslim Brothers … is the world’s most influential and one of the largest Islamist movements, and is the largest political opposition organization in many Arab states. Founded in Egypt in 1928 as a Pan-Islamic, religious, political, and social movement by the Islamic scholar and schoolteacher Hassan al-Banna, by the end of World War II the MB had an estimated two million members. Its ideas had gained it supporters throughout the Arab world and influenced other Islamist groups with its “model of political activism combined with Islamic charity work”. Its most famous slogan, used worldwide, is “Islam is the solution.”
The Brotherhood’s stated goal is to instill the Qur’an and Sunnah as the “sole reference point for …ordering the life of the Muslim family, individual, community … and state”. The movement officially opposes violent means to achieve its goals, although it at one time encompassed a paramilitary wing and its members were involved in massacres, bombings and assassinations of political opponents; notably Egyptian Prime Minister Mahmoud an-Nukrashi Pasha and the movement’s own founder Hassan al-Banna.
Despite that, not only did Obama congratulate Morsi on his electoral victory, the White House instructed Egypt’s military to speedily hand over power to The Muslim Brotherhood or risk losing billions of dollars in U.S. military and economic aid.
So much for the euphoric proclamation by western media last year of an “Arab Spring.” More like an Islamic winter in hell.
