Obama declares war on the Church. Church fights back with historic lawsuit

Two weeks ago, an earthshaking event took place but you didn’t hear about it on network TV or read about it in the soon-to-go-extinct newspapers.

Two weeks ago, something happened that has never happened in U.S. history. 43 branches of the Catholic Church sued the federal government in Superior Court for violating the Constitution’s First Amendment on Church-State relations, specifically Obama’s HHS mandate requiring religious organizations to provide, pay for, and/or facilitate insurance coverage for contraception services that violate the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Named as defendants are Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, and their respective departments.

Obama’s federal mandate requires religious organizations — including Catholic schools, universities, and hospitals — to provide in their insurance plans abortion-inducing drugs, contraceptives and sterilization procedures, which are contrary to Catholic teaching. It also authorizes the government to determine which organizations are sufficiently “religious” to warrant an exemption from the requirement. As such, the mandate violates the religious liberties guaranteed by the First Amendment, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act and other federal laws.

In an email on May 22, 2012, President of Media Research Center Brent Bozell writes:

“43 Catholic dioceses and organizations are suing the Obama administration in federal court over the attempt to force religious institutions to provide contraceptive and abortifacients with all of their health insurance.

ABC’s World News and NBC’s Nightly News completely failed to report this historic event! CBS Evening News only dedicated a brief 19 seconds to the story and framed it as a birth control debate. By contrast, ABC led their evening broadcast with the sentencing of the Rutgers student who spied on his gay roommate with a web camera. That story received three minutes and 30 seconds of coverage at the top of the newscast.

This is not a mistake or an editorial oversight by the broadcast networks. This is a deliberate and insidious withholding of national news to protect the ‘Chosen One’ who ABC, CBS and NBC have worked so hard to elect and are now abusing their journalistic influence to reelect. Even when a network like CBS mentions the suit ever-so-briefly, they botch the issue by framing it as a contraception lawsuit instead of what they know it to be: a religious freedom issue. It’s bogus, dishonest ‒ a flat out lie.

The fact is that the Catholic Church has unleashed legal Armageddon on the administration, promising ‘we will not comply’ with a health law that strips Catholics of their religious liberty. If this isn’t ‘news’ then there’s no such thing as news. This should be leading newscasts and the subject of special, in-depth reports. Instead, these networks are sending a clear message to all Americans that the networks will go to any lengths ‒ even censoring from the public an event of this historic magnitude ‒ to prevent the release of any information that will hurt Obama’s chances of re-election.”

This is not about the Catholic Church. This is not about Catholics. This is about the Constitution’s promise of religious freedom.

Today, tens of thousands of pro-life Americans in 160 cities across the United States will rally against the Obama Administration’s abortifacient birth control mandate. (Read more about this here.)

While many people see this as an issue of religious freedom, many others see it as a healthcare issue. The whole point of healthcare reform is to bring healthcare to as many people as possible as cost effectively as possible. The mandate for employers to provide certain coverage (including women’s health, which includes birth control) to everyone was a compromise to try and preserve as much of the current system as possible.

If we begin granting exceptions to any industry (using the broadest sense of the term) for any reason, then the whole effort fails and we’re back to square one.

Some people are okay with that, and don’t want reform, but what a lot of people don’t realize is that our current system is doomed. It CANNOT survive the Baby Boomers. The poor (including most of the children and elderly in this country) will lose access to healthcare. When the system collapses and hospitals (mainly public county and rural hospitals) close their doors, and large segments of the population cannot get access to healthcare, the social upheavals will make Watts and the 60’s look like a Norman Rockwell paradise. Revolutions have been fought over less. This current flap over birth control isn’t going to break the camels back, but it does add a lot to the load because of it’s potential as a precedent.

Sometimes EVERYONE has to take one for the team when a crisis approaches. The healthcare crisis is HERE and isn’t going away unless everyone pitches in to hammer out a solution. ALL of us, in one form or another, pay for things we don’t believe in. On this issue, it is the churches turn to take a hit in the name of the greater good, or to come up with a realistic alternative.

    • Yeah, and in the name of “healthcare,” the Constitution’s 1st Amendment’s religious freedom be damned!

I see the old “edward oleander” is back.

I admit that not being religious makes it easier for me to ask for compromise from the churches, but I’m trying to see a way out of a grim future. Providing birth control coverage makes fiscal sense, as well as preserving the rights of women to govern their own body.

If healthcare falls apart, it will cost us in lives. More poor, more elderly, more children will die. Preventing conception is not murder. Contributing to the death of living people is. Who wants to be part of that?

And yeah, although I’m finding more common ground here than I ever expected, I’m still the liberal I was last year. Funny thing is, if you go back 30+ years, the real “old” edward oleander was a staunch conservative who voted for Ronald Reagan, protested in favor of resuming the military draft, and almost earned an economics degree based on Supply Side theory… 🙂

And to hell with the Constitution’s 1st Amendment. That’s liberal priorities. You liberals would sell your grandmother for your political beliefs.

        • No one should be forced to pay for the morning after pill or an abortion if they do not agree with it. The owner/institution should be in control of what they pay for what they do not…don’t like it…work somewhere else. No one forced these women to apply! If y’all win this what’s next…forcing Christian Doctors to perform an abortions? Exactly! There is no difference!

Your definition of a crisis may be quite different from mine. Who defines “crisis”? Ever heard this admin say “never let a crisis go to waste”?

    • Mr. Oleander-

My parents paid for my healthcare out of pocket until I got married and now I pay for it….out of pocket. There was a time, not so long ago, that medical Insurance only covered the big issues not every single doctor’s visit.

People’s priorities are screwed up. They are not going to get rid of their cell phones, Internet, or cable as long as the government is paying for their BIRTH CONTROL. When the government quits handing out the money for things like BIRTH CONTROL….a woman will have to make a choice for once. Cable or sex? (if she wants both…a box of condoms are equal to her daily Big Gulp!) You Democrats want the government out of your bed rooms….here ya go!

I’m sorry but I am NOT going to “take one for the team” when it comes between me and my LORD and SAVIOR. Plus…isn’t that the real problem here…half of the so called team is ALWAYS “taking one for the team” and that half is now on the sidelines all used up?

BTW, How exactly does MURDER fit into healthcare coverage? Abortion might be legal….but it is still MURDER!

    • How do you justify the issue of 1231 exemptions from Obamacare by HHS, using your logic. These exemptions cover more than 4 million employees. This gives credibility to the argument, it is an attack on religion. Check your facts, adjust your point of view….but open your eyes first. Don’t just sit with your eyes shut and regurgitate the Obama line, because more and more people are beginning to see the truth. Back to the exemptions, Here is the link with stats as of Jan. 2012.

  3. They need to stick to their guns (NOT LITERAL GUNS, MEN IN BLACK SPIES!!) and even if they lose this lawsuit (which they probably will, in this crooked world) DEFY, DEFY, DEFY. Until they go to jail. When the jails are spilling over and there’s no one left to preach sermons and everyone is asking what’s going on, the MSM will have to be accountable. All the dirt will come to light, like the fact that Muslims are exempt from ACA because of their religion, and it will hit the fan.

  4. Solution is easy! Once a conservative president/congress is in place have the “NEW” FCC director simple revoke the lamestream media’s license to broadcast on the airwaves! and dissalow any of the existing participants to re-apply for new licence.

  5. This has got NOTHING TO DO WITH HEALTH CARE. Obama will not define for us what it means to be Catholic. As for Catholics taking a one-all for the team, it is clearly obvious that your knowledge of history is limited, and that you are on quite a different “team”, Ed! The Catholic Church in this country has always served the poor, the homeless, the downtrodden, the addicted, provided health care through its numerous, numerous Catholic hospitals, and on and on have served people of all faiths and provided so much for the good of humankind in this country and the world. And, we will not stop doing that and we say “No” to Obama and his evil and narcissistic agenda, as well as to the evil policies of his administration. INDEED AND IN FACT, 43 LAWSUITS HAVE BEEN FILED BY THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AGAINST OBAMA AND HIS ADMINISTRATION! I suspect there will be more to follow. I suggest, Oleander, that you go back to “your team” that wants to take away our inalienable rights, including religious freedom, and crawl like a snake where you came from. The Catholic Church will NEVER, NEVER be complicit in the KILLING OF CHILDREN, which has got nothing to do with women’s rights, nothing whatsoever! Mother Teresa of Calcutta, whilst giving her speech accepting the Nobel Peace Prize, stated that abortion is the worst evil ever, ever! Obama has waged war on not just the Catholic Church, but all people in this country, taking away our religious freedom. Again, Fellowship of the Minds is not interested in “your team”, whose direction is not of God, but of the devil!

  6. I like the idea. I’ll work on printing a few out to drop off at our clubhouse and perhaps even in the “free paper” box at Dunkin’ Donuts around the corner. I didn’t know about the lawsuit until reading it here. But there is no media bias…

  7. Amen brother Steve. The founding fathers are rolling in the graves because we aren’t prosecuting and executing all these liberals who are lying on TV. I like your idea of public executions – it would set a precedent and have any non conservative shaking in their boots if they dare say anything insulting toward America or conservatives. We must make America a shining beacon on the hill again. Public Executions of media personalities who dare say anything negative about lady liberty — well, let’s just say people would once again admire America. Heck , we might actually save Christianity with such a showing! We need the world to know how strong we are. We also shouldnt stop with the media ! Any teacher who tries to brainwash our kids with atheistic science like evolution– should also be tried for treason. The ultimate capital punishment for everyone who doesn’t walk lockstep with us true American patriots , the American conservative. The founding fathers would be so proud of us!!

      • Well, I was just agreeing with Steve who suggested the news media should be tried for treason and given capital punishment. After all, there is nothing more anti American than that silly constitutional notion of “freedom of the press” and “freedom of speech”.

  8. Fall of the Republic HQ full length version

Fall Of The Republic documents how an offshore corporate cartel is bankrupting the US economy by design. Leaders are now declaring that world government has arrived and that the dollar will be replaced by a new global currency.

President Obama has brazenly violated Article 1 Section 9 of the US Constitution by seating himself at the head of United Nations’ Security Council, thus becoming the first US president to chair the world body.

A scientific dictatorship is in its final stages of completion, and laws protecting basic human rights are being abolished worldwide; an iron curtain of high-tech tyranny is now descending over the planet.

Thanks everyone who posted after me! No snark, no sarcasm… I really do appreciate that several people took not only the time to read the thread, but took time and effort to post their honest thoughts. You’re all becoming less “them” and more “human,” all the time, and it’s worth taking a drubbing now and then (okay… more than just now and then!) 🙂
