We all know about this age-old symbol for the medical profession, right? It’s called the rod of Asclepius, an ancient symbol associated with medicine, healing, and the Greek god Asclepius, son of Apollo, who was a practitioner of medicine in ancient Greek mythology. The symbol consists of a serpent entwined around a staff. Hippocrates himself was a worshipper of Asclepius.
The rod of Asclepius (with 2 serpents instead of 1) is often confused with the Cadaceus, even though the latter has no connection with Hippocrates or the healing arts. Cadaceus actually is the symbol of the god Hermes (thus, the wings) and carries connotations of theft, deception, and death.
Well, finally we now have a new medical symbol for the “health care plan” we’ll all be getting. It’s the ObamaScrewU. Welcome to the Brave New World of ObamaCare!
