10 Most Expensive States in America

Rate this post

A CNBC study ranks America’s 50 states on the ACCRA Cost of Living Index to find which are the most expensive states to live in. The states are ranked using a 50-point scale—the lower the score, the higher the cost of living, and vice versa. ACCRA’s data are compiled from the average prices from Q1 2010 through Q1 2011.
Only one of the ten most expensive states ranks among the top ten overall in CNBC’s Top States for Business study.
What CNBC doesn’t point out is another interesting fact:

9 of the top 10 most expensive states were “blue” states that voted for Obama in 2008.

Alaska, of course, is the lone “red state” among the ten. I also quibble with why CNBC did not include state and local taxes in compiling its list.

  1. Gas has went up since this was done.
    Gas in S.F. Bay Area {Kalifornistan} is @ $4.00 a gallon.

  2. Yes, gas prices are much higher than that in MD; it is at least $3.85/gall in my area. Plus, a house for $500,000 …. exactly where is that one? Our homes are much more than that. Hmmm … a doctor’s visit for $87 …. maybe back in 1995. Time to move, I guess.

  3. I guess it is no coincidence that those states have been mostly run by democrats in recent decades.

  4. I’m surprised WA ST isn’t on the list. We have the highest gas tax (gas now at $3.89/gal or more), a doctor visit costs me $262, and movie ticket is $11.50. Maybe I should move to Hawaii 🙂
