This is Huge!
Day nine and my garbage is still not picked up. My cat brought home a rat this past week (first time in the six years I’ve lived there) and we now have coyotes spotted in the area too (due to the garbage, I believe). I had to kill the rat with my bb gun and cats are now house-bound due to coyotes. Ugh. And why isn’t garbage being picked up? Take a wild guess…
Komo News: As pickup service resumes for some Waste Management residential customers, striking drivers have taken to the phones to get their side of the story out to many customers.
Countless residents have reported receiving robocalls left on their voicemail from people describing themselves as a Waste Management driver. The calls specifically address the company’s decision to hire replacement drivers.
“Waste Management is substituting us with drivers from out of state who may not be qualified to drive heavy garbage trucks on our region’s dangerous roads,” says one robocall. “Please be careful. Make sure your children stay out of the way of the trucks. Call police if you see something dangerous.“
Waste Management maintains it has hired an ample number of replacement drivers, some of them on a permanent basis. Spokeswoman Robin Freedman says Waste Management is taking its best candidates from a recent job fair and running recruitment ads.
The walkout has affected 217,000 customers in the Seattle-Everett area. Some business owners have angrily paid to dump their own trash. In neighborhoods, flies are circling curbside garbage bins where trash has started to stink in the 70-degree summer weather. The Washington Fish and Wildlife Department urged residents to keep garbage enclosed to avoid attracting raccoons and bears.
Using replacement drivers from around the country, Waste Management has been offering limited service to priority commercial customers such as restaurants. Now, the company is screening applicants for permanent replacement jobs, spokeswoman Robin Freedman said.
“Our drivers have chosen to enter into a strike. We have an obligation to the community, so we’re going to hire replacement workers to get the job done,” she said. Waste Management has the contract to collect waste in 60 percent of Seattle.
About 150 yard waste and recycling truck drivers represented by Local 117 walked out on July 25 after their contract expired at the end of May. About 350 garbage truck drivers represented by Local 174 are not crossing picket lines.
Local 117 wants to close a gap of about $9 an hour between the yard waste-recycling truck drivers and the garbage haulers. They drive similar trucks and the same routes and deserve the same pay, the union says.
Waste Management says it’s offering a six-year deal that would raise average salaries from $58,000 to $68,000 a year. If benefits are included, the offer is worth $98,000 a year to a driver at the end of the sixth year, the company said.
The median household annual income in 2011 in King County was about $54,000 and in Snohomish County about $51,000, the state Office of Financial Management estimated.
Teamsters Local 117 has accused Waste Management of intimidation and refusing to bargain in good faith. Members are not concerned about losing their jobs because they expect the National Labor Relations Board to agree that Waste Management has committed unfair labor practices, spokeswoman Brenda Wiest said. Hiring replacement workers is “another bullying tactic to intimidate and threaten drivers instead of bargaining in good faith,” she said.
No new talks have been announced as tension and pressure mount, like the growing mounds of garbage bags at many homes and businesses.
Bullying tactics? Like their robocalls telling people to call the police?
The salary package they offer sounds pretty darn good for the skills required for this job – basically a high school education, commercial driver’s license, lifting, and ability to handle the smell. Waste Management started airing radio commercials yesterday morning for replacement truck drivers. By noon, they already had 250 applicants.
These union thugs are dangerous and greedy. With unemployment still above 8% you’d think they would be happy just to have a job.
Update: The union & Waste Management reached a deal on Wednesday night. No details available yet on contract specifics. Union to vote on Thursday to ratify contract.

Barack Obama is not winning any voting bloc he lost in 2008, and he is not doing better with any bloc he did win four years ago.
Nevertheless, the “experts” keep telling us that this race is tied or that Obama is leading. The only way to explain these “expert’” pronouncements is that Obama has captured the coveted Power Ranger vote. Hey, if dead people and illegal aliens can’t vote anymore, toy dummies must be filling in the gaps for the real ones! As to real people, here’s the truth of where they stand on Obama.
A recent Pew poll found Obama went from up 9 points to down 5 points with Catholics since March. This translates to a shift of 18 million voters.
An April Pew poll found Evangelical Christians favor Mitt Romney 73/20, and white Catholics support him 57/37.
A Knowledge Networks poll conducted March 14-27 found Obama getting just 61% of Jewish support. No Democrat has ever won while getting 67% or less of the Jewish vote.
4) Young voters
In 2008, Obama won young voters 66/32. Today, the support for Obama among young voters has been measured at just 48/41, but more importantly, young voters have little enthusiasm to vote. Today, at best, 56% said they would vote compared to 78% who said the same in spring of 2008.
In 2008, Obama won the female vote 56/43. Monday’s Gallup poll found Obama ahead with women by 49/42.
Obama is losing men 50/42. In 2008, Obama lost men 49/48.
7) African Americans, Hispanics
In April, Gallup found Obama’s support among Blacks at 85% (down 5 points) and Hispanic support also down 5 points to 54%.
In 2008, John McCain won the veteran vote 55/45. Monday’s Gallup poll found Obama losing 58/34.
9) White voters
Obama’s approval among white voters was 34% last month. It was 37% on Election Day 2010, a bloodbath for Democrats.
10) Union workers
In April, Reuters lamented, “ New state laws designed to fight voter fraud could reduce the number of Americans signing up to vote in this year’s presidential election by hundreds of thousands, a potential problem for President Barack Obama’s re-election bid.” Rock The Vote, a national voter registration project, has withdrawn from Florida because the Sunshine State’s anti-voter fraud laws are too tough to beat.
12) Big donors
Obama’s Big PACs are raising only a fraction of what Republican PACs are putting together for November.
13) Rank-and-file Democrats
The recent primaries in West Virginia (where a federal inmate got 40% of the vote against Obama), Arkansas (where an unknown Democrat got 42% against him), and Kentucky (where “uncommitted” got 40% against Obama) shows he has little support from rank-and-file Democrats.
So who are these “experts” interviewing?
This essay is being circulated via e-mail. It is mistakenly attributed to conservative black economist Dr Walter Williams. But he did not write it.
The essay originated in April 2011 but is no less descriptive now. What the anonymous real author has to say is credible — and depressing. Our only hope is if the key Dem demographic groups not turn out to vote in the large numbers they did in 2008.
Note: In republishing this essay, I’ve done some tweaking and editing. Feel free to circulate the essay, but please, don’t attribute it to Dr. Williams!
H/t my dear friend Sol.
Why Obama can not lose the 2012 election
Can President Obama be defeated in 2012?
I am going on record as saying that President Barak Obama will win a second term.
The media won’t tell you this because a good election campaign means hundreds of millions (or in Obama’s case billions) of dollars to them in advertising.
But the truth is, there simply are no conditions under which Barak Obama can be defeated in 2012. The quality of the Republican candidate doesn’t matter. (Though the quality of the voters DOES matter!)
Obama gets reelected. Nine percent unemployment? No problem. Obama will win. Gas prices moving toward five dollars a gallon? He still wins. The economy soars or goes into the gutter. Obama wins. War in the Middle East? He wins a second term.
America’s role as the leading Superpower disappears? Hurrah for Barack Obama! The U.S. government rushes toward bankruptcy, the dollar continues to sink on world markets and the price of daily goods and services soars due to inflation fueled by Obama’s extraordinary deficit spending? Obama wins handily.
You are crazy. Don’t you understand how volatile politics can be when overall economic, government, and world conditions are declining? Sure I do.
And that’s why I know Obama will win. The American people are notoriously ignorant of economics. And economics is the key to why Obama should be defeated.
Even when Obama’s policies lead the nation to final ruin, the majority of the American people are going to believe the bait-and-switch tactics Obama and his supporters in the media will use to explain why it isn’t his fault. After all, things were much worse than understood when he took office.
Obama’s reelection is really a very, very simple math problem. Consider the following:
1) Blacks will vote for Obama blindly. Period. Doesn’t matter what he does. It’s a race thing. He’s one of us.
2) College educated women will vote for Obama. Though they will be offended by this, they swoon at his oratory. It’s really not more complex than that.
3) Liberals will vote for Obama. He is still their great hope.
4) Democrats will vote for Obama. He is the leader of their party and his coat tails will carry them to victory nationwide.
5) Hispanics will vote for Obama. He is the path to citizenship for those who are illegal and Hispanic leaders recognize the political clout they carry in the Democratic Party.
6) Union members will vote overwhelmingly for Obama. He is their key to money and power in business, state and local politics.
7) Big Business will support Obama. They already have. He has almost $1 Billion dollars in his reelection purse gained largely from his connections with Big Business and is gaining more everyday. Big Business loves Obama because he gives them access to taxpayer money so long as they support his social and political agenda.
8) The media love him. They may attack the people who work for him, but they love him. After all, to not love him would be racist.
9) Most other minorities and special interest groups will vote for him. Oddly, the overwhelming majority of Jews and Muslims will support him because they won’t vote Republican. American Indians will support him. Obviously homosexuals tend to vote Democratic.
10) Approximately half of independents will vote for Obama. And he doesn’t need anywhere near that number because he has all of the groups previously mentioned. And lastly….
11) There is one last group, and it’s a huge group. The group overlaps with some of the groups listed above. What’s this last group? I’ll call this group The Parasites. They are the nearly one-half (43% at last count) of all U.S. adults who do not pay any federal taxes, most of whom receive money from the government. These people will vote for Obama because they will not do anything that might jeopardize the flow of taxpayer dollars to themselves.
Obama will win an overwhelming victory in 2012.
It appears our friends at the AFL-CIO (which in Dave’s world means American Federation of Losers-Communist International Operatives) have come up with some suggestions for ways the congressional “supercommittee” could go about reducing our nation’s debt:
The AFL-CIO is proposing a number of tax hikes and healthcare policy reforms, along with drawing troops down in Afghanistan and Iraq, to help bring down the national deficit.
In a memo sent to reporters Monday, Alison Omens, the labor federation’s director of media outreach, says the AFL-CIO will be urging members of Congress this October to help get Americans back to work, including passing $140 billion in funds for rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure and aiding state governments as proposed by President Obama in his American Jobs Act.
Further, the AFL-CIO will be calling on lawmakers not to pass proposals that would slash benefits under Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. The memo comes as the congressional task force, known as the “supercommittee,” begins its job of coming up with at least $1.5 trillion in government spending cuts this fall.
And that is just for starters.
You can read the rest here.
Once you have finished reading, you will understand why the only reason these people have jobs is because they are a members of an organized mob.
Via KOMO News: Outsiders verbally came to the rescue Saturday of behind-the-scenes workers at Sea-Tac Airport, demanding union benefits for hundreds of passenger service workers at the airport. Hosea Wilcox is one of those workers, an airport sky cap who is struggling to make ends meet. He’s worked at Sea-Tac for 31 years – and still makes minimum wage.
“We try to do what we can for the passengers, go through little loopholes if we can, if we can,” he says. Simply put, he gets airport travelers where they need to go, on time. “We’re going to do whatever we can for the passenger, above and beyond, with a smile on our face – the human touch,” says Wilcox.
But Wilcox could use a little help himself. After three decades on the job, he says, “I’m struggling; I’m struggling. … It’s tough, real tough.” He says 80 percent of his income is from tips.
It’s not just sky caps but also hundreds more airport workers who are in the same situation – making minimum wage or little more, barely enough to scrape by.
And on Saturday, hundreds of union supporters rallied on their behalf for better pay, health benefits and job security for some 600 employees at the airport. “What kind of power? Union power,” they chanted. “The airport workers are underpaid, basically working in slave conditions,” says union supporter Mia Franklin.
Many at Saturday’s rally do not work at the airport, but support unionization for those who do. “This is the first time that people carrying bags, pushing wheelchairs, cleaning bathrooms are hearing that other people care about them,” says Heather Weiner of the Teamsters Union.
Meanwhile, Wilcox still relies on travelers’ generosity to pay his bills.
Some days they are generous. But others can be fickle. He wishes he had the security of a union wage job. “It gets harder and harder,” he says.
Um, last time I looked this was a free country and this guy, who has been employed there for over 30 years, has the right to leave and look for another job. Why should they be paid more than minimum wage? These are positions that basically require no education and limited skills. Sure, they are physically demanding at times, but that doesn’t guarantee you a high-paying job.
And he wants the security of a union wage job? Well, wouldn’t we all like that! I’m afraid that’s not how the real world works.
Today’s sermon at church was entitled, “The Power of an Invested Life”. The message was to live your life with accountability, utilizing what God has given you. And God entrusts unequally - some are given more talents than others. “To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability.” Matthew 25:15. “We each have been given different gifts, according to the grace given us.” Romans 12:6.
I know the unions would like to believe that every one of their employees deserves better pay than the average worker. But the truth is, some jobs don’t warrant high pay. Therein lies the beauty of the free will we are given to pursue that which does makes us happy and successful in living a productive life.
I once taught a college course on Third World economic and political development. I used to teach my students that one of the attributes of “developing countries” (academic euphemism for the impoverished Third World) is the corrupt politics of patronage or “patron-client relations,” where politicians would dispense jobs and favors in return for votes.
Using that as a defining indicator, America has become a Third World country.
In addition to the hundreds of waivers from Obamacare which we already know, add this doozy:
Nearly 20% of new Obamacare waivers are gourmet restaurants, nightclubs, fancy hotels in former Speaker of the House Democratic Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi’s district in San Francisco.
Please remember that this is the same corrupt Obamacare “heath care” law that RINO Newt Gingrich wants to retain.
Of the 204 new Obamacare waivers President Barack Obama’s administration approved in April, 38 are for fancy eateries, hip nightclubs and decadent hotels in House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s Northern California district.
That’s in addition to the 27 new waivers for health care or drug companies and the 31 new union waivers Obama’s Department of Health and Human Services approved.
Pelosi’s district secured almost 20 percent of the latest issuance of waivers nationwide, and the companies that won them didn’t have much in common with companies throughout the rest of the country that have received Obamacare waivers.
Other common waiver recipients were labor union chapters, large corporations, financial firms and local governments. But Pelosi’s district’s waivers are the first major examples of luxurious, gourmet restaurants and hotels getting a year-long pass from Obamacare.
For instance, Boboquivari’s restaurant in Pelosi’s district in San Francisco got a waiver from Obamacare. Boboquivari’s advertises $59 porterhouse steaks, $39 filet mignons and $35 crab dinners.
Then, there’s Café des Amis, which describes its eating experience as “a timeless Parisian style brasserie” which is “located on one of San Francisco’s premier shopping and strolling boulevards, Union Street,” according to the restaurant’s Web site.
“Bacchus Management Group, in partnership with Perry Butler, is bringing you that same warm, inviting feeling, with a distinctive San Francisco spin,” the Web site reads. Somehow, though, the San Francisco upper class eatery earned itself a waiver from Obamacare because it apparently cost them too much to meet the law’s first year requirements.
The reason the Obama administration says it has given out waivers is to exempt certain companies or policyholders from “annual limit requirements.” The applications for the waivers are “reviewed on a case by case basis by department officials who look at a series of factors including whether or not a premium increase is large or if a significant number of enrollees would lose access to their current plan because the coverage would not be offered in the absence of a waiver.” The waivers don’t allow a company to permanently refrain from implementing Obamacare’s stipulations, but companies can reapply for waivers annually through 2014.
Café Mason, a diner near San Francisco’s Union Square, got a waiver too. When The Daily Caller asked the manager about the waiver and how the president’s new sweeping federal health care law was affecting his restaurant, he hung up the phone. The Franciscan Crab restaurant on Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco got a waiver. Its menu features entrees ranging from about $15 to $60. The Franciscan’s general manager didn’t return TheDC’s requests for comment.
Four-star hotel Campton Place got one too, as did Hotel Nikko San Francisco, which describes itself as “four-diamond luxury in the heart of the city.” Tru Spa, which Allure Magazine rated the “best day spa in San Francisco,” received an Obamacare waiver as well.
Before hanging up on TheDC, Tru Spa’s owner said new government health care regulations, both the federal-level Obamacare and new local laws in Northern California, have “devastated” the business. “It’s been bad for us,” he said, without divulging his name, referring to the new health care restrictions.
But, the spa owner wouldn’t talk about it or the reason his company sought a waiver. He hung up after saying, “I’ve got clients on the other line, good-bye.”
San Francisco Honda, which has two of its three locations in Pelosi’s district, and San Francisco’s Royal Motors Group both got waivers too. Neither called TheDC back.
Blue & Gold Fleet, which describes itself as “the Bay Area’s premier provider of Bay Cruise, Ferry Service and Motorcoach Tours,” got an Obamacare waiver approved in April. The tour service company didn’t return TheDC’s requests for comment.
Nightclub Infusion Lounge got an Obamacare waiver approved in April too. Infusion Lounge calls itself a “sophisticated nightlife destination” with “Asian inspired sub-rosa lounge, fashioned by Hong Kong’s hottest designer, Kinney Chan,” which makes for a “true ultra lounge catering to both dancing hipsters and young professionals looking to relax in style.” Infusion Lounge’s owners didn’t return TheDC’s requests for comment either.
Simco Restaurants and several other affiliated chains based in the area got waivers for their businesses as well. For example, Gordon Yoshida, the manager of memorabilia store Only in San Francisco, told TheDC that Sandra Fletcher of Simco walked him through the process of getting an Obamacare waiver. Fletcher did not return TheDC’s requests for comment.
Pelosi’s office did not respond to TheDC’s requests for comment either.
In Scranton, New Jersey, the Scranton police union has filed an unfair labor practice complaint against the city for an off-duty drug arrest made by Police Chief Dan Duffy in March. The complaint, which was filed with the state Labor Relations Board on April 14, takes issue with the chief arresting a man who was allegedly in possession of marijuana because the chief is not a member of the collective bargaining unit and was “off duty” when the March 20 arrest was made.
“I think it’s absurd. I’m not going to turn my head on crime that takes place,” Chief Duffy said. “I took the same oath (as a police officer) that everyone else took. “On my day off and I’m driving around as the police chief, and that’s wrong?” he asked.
The complaint states that “the work of apprehending and arresting individuals has been the sole and exclusive province of members of the bargaining unit,” and that the city did not inform or negotiate with the union that the chief would be “performing bargaining unit work.” Because of this, the union says the city violated the state Labor Relations Act and the Policemen and Firemen Collective Bargaining Act.
“We’re not out to bust his chops,” Sgt. Bob Martin, police union president, said. “It’s not against the chief. The action is against the city.”
While the chief has been known for several off-duty arrests in the city, the complaint only makes mention of the March 20 incident. On that day, Chief Duffy said he was not scheduled to work but decided to check on citizen complaints about possible drug activity in a part of West Scranton.
While driving through the area, he arrested a man who had an outstanding bench warrant issued by Lackawanna County Court. The chief also searched the man and allegedly found he possessed a marijuana joint and drug paraphernalia, leading to the man’s arrest on drug charges.
Sgt. Martin acknowledged that the chief is “morally and legally obligated” to act if he sees a crime happen and to make an arrest if necessary.
But, the union president said the chief, as member of management, should not actively root out crime or randomly patrol neighborhoods while off duty because it violates union agreements that protect rank-and-file officers’ employment. The union is concerned city administrators will have more leverage to lay off police officers because “Chief Duffy will step in” and do the work, Sgt. Martin said.
Chief Duffy said he will not stop patrolling neighborhoods or making arrests if he receives reports from citizens, whether on or off-duty, because of the complaint. “It’s not like I am getting the information and keeping it to myself and playing hero,” the chief said. “I will continue to do this. I’m a public servant.”
Good for Chief Duffy – he understands his role. And the union should be ashamed for their actions. Once again they show us it’s not about “public service” yet rather protecting their union jobs.
