NTSB to check whether Chicago train operator dozed before crash

AP4:09 p.m. EDT March 25, 2014

CHICAGO (AP) – An emergency track-side braking system activated but failed to stop a Chicago commuter train from jumping the tracks and barreling to the top of an escalator at O’Hare International Airport, a federal investigator said Tuesday.

The events that led to Monday’s accident, which occurred around 3 a.m. and injured more than 30 passengers, might have begun with the train operator dozing off toward the end of her shift, according to the union representing transit workers. But Tuesday’s announcement that a piece of emergency safety equipment might have failed was the first indication the accident could have been caused by human error and mechanical failure.

National Transportation Safety Board investigator Ted Turpin said a preliminary review showed the train was traveling at the correct speed of 25 mph as it entered the station. Investigators said they have not yet determined whether the operator ever applied the in-cab brake.

Turpin, who is leading the investigation, said an automatic emergency braking system located on the tracks was activated but failed to stop the train as it burst onto the platform.

“It activated,” Turpin said of the emergency system. “That’s all we know factually. Now, whether it did it in time or not, that’s an analysis that we have to figure out.”

A team from the NTSB also is exploring how rested the train operator was before starting her shift and whether rules governing overtime had been violated, after a union official suggested she might have dozed off.

They planned to interview the train operator Tuesday afternoon.

“We’re going to ask probably the operator how they felt … because we always take into consideration the fatigue factor. It’s one of the things we do investigate,” Turpin said.

The operator, whom officials have not identified, was off duty for about 17 hours before starting work around 8 p.m. Sunday but had recently put in a lot of overtime, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 308 President Robert Kelly said Monday.

“I know she works a lot – as a lot of our members do,” he said. “They gotta earn a living. … She was extremely tired.”

Kelly said the operator took standard drug and alcohol tests after the derailment and that she assured him they were not an issue.

Asked whether she might have nodded off, Kelly responded: “The indication is there. Yes.”

Federal investigators hoped to turn the scene over to local officials later Tuesday to begin removing the train from the escalator at the underground Chicago Transit Authority station.

The train is designed to stop if operators become incapacitated and their hand slips off the spring-loaded controls. Kelly speculated that, upon impact, inertia might have thrown the operator against the hand switch, accelerating it onto the escalator.

A Pilot-Father’s Love…

Most people today think it improper to discipline children,
so I have tried other methods to control my kids when
they have had one of ‘those moments’.

Since I’m a pilot, one method that I have found very effective
is for me to just take the child for a short flight during which
I say nothing, and give the child the opportunity to reflect
on his or her behaviour.

I don’t know whether it’s the steady vibration from the engines, or just the time away from any distractions such as TV, video games, computer, iPod, etc.

Either way, my kids usually calm down and stop misbehaving
after our flight together. I believe that eye to eye contact
during these sessions is an important element in achieving
the desired results.

I’ve included a photo below of one of my sessions with my son, in case you’d like to use the technique.

“Why I Want a Microchip Implant”

image

Interesting article by Michael Snyder:

Would you like to have an RFID microchip implanted under your skin? If you are anything like me, you would never allow such a thing to be done. But many others, especially among the younger generations, see things very differently. RFID microchip implants and other forms of “wearable technology” are increasingly being viewed as “cool”, “trendy” and “cutting edge” by young people that wish to “enhance” themselves. And of course the mainstream media is all in favor of these “technological advancements”. For example, the BBC just published a piece entitled “Why I Want A Microchip Implant“. We are told that such implants could solve a whole host of societal problems. Identity theft and credit card fraud would be nearly eliminated, many other forms of crime would be significantly reduced, children would never go missing and we wouldn’t have to remember a vast array of passwords and PIN numbers like we do now. We are told that if we just adopted such technology that our lives would be so much better. But is that really the case?

As our society becomes “digitally integrated”, technologists tell us that it is “inevitable” that wearable technology will become as common as smart phones are today. And the BBC article that I just mentioned is very eager for that day to arrive…

Ultimately, implanted microchips offer a way to make your physical body machine-readable. Currently, there is no single standard of communicating with the machines that underpin society – from building access panels to ATMs – but an endless diversity of identification systems: magnetic strips, passwords, PIN numbers, security questions, and dongles. All of these are attempts to bridge the divide between your digital and physical identity, and if you forget or lose them, you are suddenly cut off from your bank account, your gym, your ride home, your proof of ID, and more. An implanted chip, by contrast, could act as our universal identity token for navigating the machine-regulated world.

And for some people, that day is already here. In fact, at some technology conferences people actually line up to get chipped…

This month at the Transhuman Visions conference in San Francisco, Graafstra set up an “implantation station” offering attendees the chance to be chipped at $50 a time. Using a large needle designed for microchipping pets, Graafstra injected a glass-coated RFID tag the size of a rice grain into each volunteer. By the end of the day Graafstra had created 15 new cyborgs.

How creepy is that?

In addition, scientists have now developed batteries that are powered by the human body that could be used to provide a permanent power source for implantable technology. The following is a brief excerpt from a recent article by Kristan Harris entitled “Scientists Develop Human-Powered Battery For RFID Implantable Chips“…

A group of United States and Chinese researchers have collaborated to created a tiny implantable batteries that feed off of human energy. These thin, flexible mechanical energy harvesters have had been successfully tested on cows. The process uses what is known as conformal piezoelectric energy harvesting and storage from motions of the heart, lung, and diaphragm.

It the future, they say, it could be used to power a range of gadgets. Will it be long until you will charge your I-phone by plugging into your own body?

Of course RFID microchips don’t actually have to be implanted to be useful. In fact, they are already being used to track schoolchildren all over the United States…

Upon arriving in the morning, according to the Associated Press, each student at the CCC-George Miller preschool will don a jersey with a stitched in RFID chip. As the kids go about the business of learning, sensors in the school will record their movements, collecting attendance for both classes and meals. Officials from the school have claimed they’re only recording information they’re required to provide while receiving federal funds for their Headstart program.

And over in the UK, RFID microchips are being used to track children wherever they go all day long…

For those who think the NSA the worst invader of privacy, I invite you to share an afternoon with Aiden and Foster, two 11-year-old boys, as they wrap up a Friday at school. Aiden invites his friend home to hang out and they text their parents, who agree to the plan.

As they ride on the bus Foster’s phone and a sensor on a wristband alert the school and his parents of a deviation from his normal route. The school has been notified that he is heading to Aiden’s house so the police are not called.

As they enter the house, the integrated home network recognizes Aiden and pings an advisory to his parents, both out at work, who receive the messages on phones and tablets.

We are rapidly entering a dystopian future in which it will be “normal” for technology to monitor our movements 24 hours a day. Most people will probably welcome this change, but it also opens up the door for an oppressive government to someday greatly abuse this technology.

Another type of “wearable technology” that is rapidly gaining acceptance is “smart tattoos”.

Normally, we are accustomed to thinking of tattoos as body art. But that is about to change. Just check out this excerpt from a recent Gizmodo article…

Everyone from neurologists to biohackers is reinventing the very idea of the tattoo. With the right technology, tattoos can do a lot more than just look beautiful or badass. They can become digital devices as useful and complex as the smartphone that bounces around in your pocket. It sounds wildly futuristic, but the technology already exists.

In fact, a company called MC10 is working on a wide range of “smart tattoos” that will be able to do some pretty wild things…

Materials scientist John Rogers is doing some pretty incredible work with flexible electronics that stick to your skin like a temporary tattoo. These so-called “epidural electronics” can do anything from monitoring your body’s vital signs to alerting you when you’re starting to get a sunburn. Rogers and his company MC10 are currently trying to figure out ways to get the electronics to communicate with other devices like smartphones so that they can start building apps.

And Motorola actually has a patent for a tattoo that will take commands from unvocalized words in your throat…

The tattoo they have in mind is actually one that will be emblazoned over your vocal cords to intercept subtle voice commands — perhaps even subvocal commands, or even the fully internal whisperings that fail to pluck the vocal cords when not given full cerebral approval. One might even conclude that they are not just patenting device communications from a patch of smartskin, but communications from your soul.

They are calling it “wearable computing”, and what we are witnessing now is just the tip of the iceberg.

What we will see in the future is probably far beyond anything that any of us could imagine right now. The following is from a recent Computer World article…

But imagine a future where anything you might want to know simply appears to you without any action or effort on your part. You could be eating in a restaurant, and Google Glass could, for example, tell you that it’s the spot where your father proposed to your mother. Or that your friend will be late because of traffic, the salmon got bad reviews online, your parking meter will expire in 20 minutes, or the bathroom is through the bar and up the stairs to the right. Imagine that such knowledge could simply appear into your field of vision at the exact moment when you want to know it.

That’s where wearable computing is going.

All of this may sound very “cool” to a lot of people.

But what happens if we are all required to have “electronic identity tattoos” someday?

What happens if an oppressive government uses this technology to watch, track, monitor and control all of us 24 hours a day with this technology?

What happens if you are not able to get a job, have a bank account or buy anything without “proper identification”?

I think that you can see where I am going with this.

Technology is truly a double-edged sword. It can do great good, but it can also be used for great evil.

So what do you think about all of this? Please feel free to share your thoughts by posting a comment below…

The terrorists have won: TSA agent confiscates sock monkey’s toy pistol

monkey

KING5: “Rooster Monkburn” the cowboy sock monkey is without his pistol, thanks to a diligent TSA agent in St. Louis.

Phyllis May of Redmond, Wash. says she is “appalled and shocked and embarrassed all at the same time” about the incident that happened on Dec. 3.
May has a small business selling unique sock monkey dolls. She says she and her husband were on their way from St. Louis to Sea-Tac and she had a couple of monkeys and sewing supplies with her in a carry-on bag.

“His pistol was in there,” she says of the sock monkey “Rooster Monkburn,” a take-off on John Wayne character “Rooster Cogburn” from the film “True Grit.”
May and her husband were going through the screening process when she noticed that one of her bags was missing.

“And the (TSA agent) held it up and said ‘whose is this?’” she said. “I realized oh, my God this is my bag.”  May said the TSA agent went through the bag, through the sewing supplies and found the two-inch long pistol.  “She said ‘this is a gun,’” said May. “I said no, it’s not a gun it’s a prop for my monkey.”  “She said ‘If I held it up to your neck, you wouldn’t know if it was real or not,’ and I said ‘really?’” said May.

The TSA agent told May she would have to confiscate the tiny gun and was supposed to call the police. ”

“She took my monkey’s gun,” said May, who has retained her sense of humor.

Rooster Monkburn has been disarmed so I’m sure everyone on the plane was safe,” she said. “I understand she was doing her job but at some point doesn’t common sense prevail?” (NO)

In the end, the agent did not call police and May did get her other sewing supplies back.

On Monday, the TSA issued a statement, saying “TSA officers are dedicated to keeping the nation’s transportation security systems safe and secure for the traveling public. Under longstanding aircraft security policy, and out of an abundance of caution, realistic replicas of firearms are prohibited in carry-on bags.”

Expert Testifies to Congress that Obama’s ‘Ignoring Laws’ Could Lead to Overthrow of Government

by Noah Rothman | 12:34 pm, December 3rd, 2013

Cannon

During a congressional committee hearing about the constitutional limits imposed on the presidency and the implications of President Barack Obama’s disregard for implementing the Affordable Care Act as written, one expert testified that the consequences of the president’s behavior were potentially grave. He said that the precedent set by Obama could eventually lead to an armed revolt against the federal government

On Tuesday, Michael Cannon, Cato Institute’s Director of Health Policy Studies, testified before a congressional committee about the dangers of the president’s legal behavior.

“There is one last thing to which the people can resort if the government does not respect the restrains that the constitution places on the government,” Cannon said. “Abraham Lincoln talked about our right to alter our government or our revolutionary right to overthrow it.”

“That is certainly something that no one wants to contemplate,” he continued. “If the people come to believe that the government is no longer constrained by the laws then they will conclude that neither are they.”

“That is a very dangerous sort of thing for the president to do, to wantonly ignore the laws,” Cannon concluded, “to try to impose obligation upon people that the legislature did not approve.”

A Declaration of Independence for our times

Several years ago, after reading our Founding Fathers’ Declaration of Independence, FOTM’s Dave McMullen wrote this essay “A Redress of Grievances,” now brought up-to-date with five additional new grievances.

Most of the offenses addressed in the Declaration not only are being committed by the United States government today, some are worse.

A Redress of Grievances

by Dave McMullen

In accordance with the inherited truth established by our Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 that the powers of our government shall not exceed the consent of the people being governed

We, the citizens of the United States of America, having endured these injustices for too long, do present to the President and the Congress, as is our right a petition for a redress of grievances, and do demand a reply and actions to correct these listed offenses.

1. The right of all American citizens to work free of any requirement to join an organized labor union.

2. The failure of our justice system to prosecute white collar criminals; both corporate and political.

3. Federal government’s unfair redistribution of tax funds collected from states and unfair redistribution of said taxes to promote and secure, through buying votes, a progressive socialist ideology.

4. Promoting a progressive socialist ideology in all of our public school system.

5. Failure of our public school system to educate our children.

6. Attacks on our Freedom of Speech.

7. Attacks on our Freedom of Religion.

8. Attacks on our Right to Bear Arms.

9. Cooperation of corruption between government and banking interests to the detriment of citizens of our USA.

10. Cooperation of corruption between government and foreign countries to the detriment of the citizens of our USA.

11. Collection of political contributions from the purse of foreign hire against the best interest of our USA.

12. Catering to foreign interests to the detriment of domestic interests.

13. Excessive government regulations on private enterprise causing unwarranted financial harm, and a reduction in our ability to compete in a world marketplace.

14. Legislating as public servants in secret chambers.

15. Pressing legislation into law against the will of the majority of the citizens.

16. Fast tracking unfair and unconstitutional legislation through Congress, thereby denying the people time for public scrutiny of said legislations.

17. Waging wars, undeclared by Congress, for the benefit of corporate and political financial gains against the best interest of the American people.

18. Excluding yourselves from the laws of the land by participating in insider trading and then legislating to produce favorable results for your criminal activities; thereby damaging business and individual investors who are lawfully engaged in our stock markets.

19. Failure of the government to enforce existing laws that protect the best interests and rights of American citizens.

20. Preventing state governments from enacting and enforcing legislation that works for the common good of its citizens.

21. Robbing the Social Security trust fund, thereby depriving taxpaying citizens of their retirement funds and also burdening future taxpayers to replace the misappropriated funds.

22. Denying the American people transparency into the activities of the Federal Reserve bank.

23. Printing of deficit fiat currency thereby taxing the American people without our consent or approval, causing the devaluation of our assets and the inflation of our currency.

24. The failure to produce a balanced federal budget.

25. The loss of untold billions of tax dollars through wasteful spending, theft, and mismanagement.

26. Passing legislation that violates our Freedom of privacy.

27. Harassing citizen groups in an attempt to deny these citizens the right to peaceful assembly.

28. A cooperation of corruption between politics and special interest groups thereby denying the citizens fair representation.

29. Harassing freedom of press and speech by the Federal Communication Commission.

30. Levying excessive employee taxes on employers thereby causing great unemployment in our country.

31. Perpetuating an unfair legal system that unjustly damages our citizens and businesses by the failure of Congress to enact any meaningful tort reform legislation.

32. The distribution of tax money through social welfare programs which unfairly burdens working class Americans.

33. The lack of a presidential line item veto which perpetuates the practice of packing toxic legislation into our budget bills.

34. A failure of full disclosure into all activities by the CIA related to the tragic events caused by the operations known as Fast and Furious and Benghazi.

35. The failure of the government to secure our borders against illegal immigration and illegal drug trafficking.

36. The failure of the government to reduce in any meaningful way the huge illegal drug trade that produces so much evil in our country and the world.

37. The distribution of our tax dollars to foreign countries that only too often just makes foreign leaders rich on the backs of USA taxpayers at a time when we can least afford it.

38. The use of our tax dollars to pay for activities such as abortion that is against the conscience of many citizens (no one should be forced to pay for activities they deem morally wrong).

39. For declaring the USA a battlefield thereby robbing its citizens of their constitutional protections from our government no longer in our control.

40. Using tax payer dollars to create standing armies within our borders — Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Agency (TSA).

41. The federal government’s National Security Agency (NSA) spying on our private phone calls and emails.

42.  Using taxpayer funded organizations as a weapon against our businesses, our  political groups and individual citizens who do not support a socialist ideology.

43. Congress passing into law legislation that has not been read and which is not completed with little or no understanding of its effects on the people.

44. The illegal and unconstitutional use of presidential executive orders, thereby overriding the constitutionally ordained legislative power of Congress.

45. Constantly lying to the people.

I wrote the first version of A Series of Grievances with intentions of presenting it to the Congress. Since this is an on going problem, I invite readers to add to the list. But it seems while almost all agree with its content, I could find few who would sign it with me.  A fear of our government has come over most people. It must have been the same for our Founding Fathers who had the courage to sign the first Redress in our Declaration of Independence.

Signed,

Dave McMullen

Decorated, wounded Marine treated ‘shamefully’ by security screeners

Our soldiers subjected to insane rules by TSA. Photo courtesy of Patricia Martin.

Military Times: Wearing the uniform of the Few and Proud doesn’t rate preferential treatment from the Transportation Security Administration or California capitol security officers, retired Marine Cpl. Nathan Kemnitz recently found.

Kemnitz, severely injured in 2004 in a roadside bomb attack in Fallujah, has limited use of his right arm and cannot lift it above his head. So when security guards at the state capitol building in Sacramento, Calif., asked him to remove his dress blue blouse “because he was wearing too much metal,” and TSA asked him to raise his arms above his head for the full-body scanner at Sacramento International Airport, he could not comply.

“My right arm doesn’t work. It’s a lot of hassle for me to do that,” Kemntiz said. At the state capitol, the Marine’s refusal to remove his uniform top grew into a heated exchange between Kemnitz, a friend who was accompanying him and security officers.

At the airport, bystanders stared as the TSA security screener looked under Kemnitz’s medals, ran his hands under the Marine’s waistband and swabbed his shoes for explosives.

“What does a uniform and heroism represent if our own citizens — in this case employees of the TSA and security personnel — have no regard for them?” wrote Kemnitz’s escort, Patricia Martin, to Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki following the incidents.

Martin took photos and disseminated them to family, friends and members of the media. “I feel so strongly that you need to know just how shamefully even a Purple Heart recipient/disabled veteran can be treated by some TSA and security employees,” she said.

Kemnitz said after the incidents that he was not as annoyed with TSA officers as he was with a security screener at the California state capitol, whom he described as rude and unapologetic.

Kemnitz was visiting the building to be honored as his legislative district’s veteran of the year. “At some places I’m treated like royalty and at some like a terrorist. There’s got to be something in the middle,” he said.

The incident was not the first to spark similar outrage. In January, NBC journalist Luke Russert tweeted his irritation at an enhanced security screening at Reagan National Airport of a troop wearing a prosthetic. “Making Wounded Warriors with prosthetic legs go through extra explosives screening. #fail,” Russert wrote.

In March, bystanders notified Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., about what they perceived to be maltreatment of a double amputee by TSA screeners at Phoenix’s Sky Harbor Airport.

Concurrent with that incident, TSA announced it had changed its rules to eliminate a requirement that injured troops remove their shoes, jackets or hats. But to receive the expedited service, TSA asks affected personnel to call the agency’s Military Severely Injured Joint Service Operations Center before traveling.

TSA also offers escorted “curb-to-gate service” for injured or ill personnel who request it as well as the TSA Pre program to service members with a military common access card at four airports: Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, and Washington Dulles International Airport.

The Senate Sergeant-At-Arms is responsible for security screenings at the California capitol building. No one was available Friday to speak with the media regarding the incident.

Absolutely disgusting that TSA treats our soldiers this way.

Wednesday’s Chuckle.

A Mexican (an undocumented Democrat), a Black (a documented Democrat), a Muslim and a Redneck were walking together on a beach when the Black stumbled over a bottle in the sand. He picked up the bottle, rubbed the sand off it, and a Genie appeared.

@@_animated_genie_1_

“I can only grant four wishes,” the Genie said. “Since there are four of you, you may have a wish apiece.” Pointing at the Black, he said, “Since you found the bottle, you may have the first wish.”

The Black thought for a moment then said, “I wish for a fleet of ships so that I can gather all my people and take them back to our homeland, Africa .” Poof! It was done! Thousands of ships appeared on the skyline.

The Mexican said, “I weesh for enough Cheby peekups to take all my peoples back to our homeland, May-he-co!” Poof! It was done! Row after row of Chevrolet pickups appeared on the beach.

The Muslim said, “I wish for a hundred thousand camels to take all of my people away from this horrible country loaded with infidels so we can live in peace in Muslim countries and serve Allah.” Poof! It was done! A hundred thousand camels suddenly appeared on the beach.

Turning to the Redneck, the Genie asked, “And what is your

The Redneck watched as the loaded pickups began moving toward the border, then looked out to sea and watched the loaded ships sailing out into the sunset, then he looked at all of the Muslims getting on top of the camels and riding off.

The Redneck said, “Just give me a Bud Lite. It doesn’t get any

Today’ Lesson: Class Warfare. It’s Really Quite Simple

And we must give credit to the man (Satan’s Spawn) Who has made all this possible. Just think in 5 short years he has set back race relations 50 years, destroyed the futures of at least 2 generations of Black Americans. Yes you know who, So let’s give it up for President Lucy.

President Lucy.

President Lucy.

The folks who are getting the free stuff don’t like the folks who are paying for the free stuff, because the folks who are paying for the free stuff can no longer afford to pay for both the free stuff and their own stuff.

And the folks who are paying for the free stuff  want the free stuff to stop.

And the folks who are getting the free stuff want even more free stuff on top of the free stuff they are already getting!

Now the people who are forcing the people who pay for the free stuff have told the people who are RECEIVING the free stuff  that the people who are PAYING for the free stuff are being mean, prejudiced, and racist.

So the people who are GETTING the free stuff  have been convinced they need to hate the people who are paying for the free stuff   by the people who are forcing some people to pay for their free stuff and giving them the free stuff in the first place.
We have let the
free stuff giving go on for so long that there are now more people getting free stuff than paying for the free stuff.

Now understand this. All great democracies have committed financial suicide somewhere between 200 and 250 years after being founded. The reason?
The voters figured out they could vote themselves money from the treasury by electing people who promised to give them money from the treasury in exchange for electing them.
The United States officially became a Republic in
1776236 years ago. The number of people now getting free stuff outnumbers the people paying for the free stuff. Failure to change that spells the end of the United States as we know it.

CBS News: U.S. State Department Cover-Ups Range From Prostitution Charges to Drug Rings

http://washington.cbslocal.com           June 10, 2013 9:44 AM

WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – Uncovered documents show the U.S. State Department may have covered up allegations of illegal behavior ranging from sexual assaults to an underground drug ring.

CBS News reports that is has unearthed documents from the Diplomatic Security Service (DSS), an internal watchdog agency, that implicate the State Department in a series of misconducts worldwide.

The memo, reported by CBS News’ John Miller, cited eight specific examples, including allegations that a State Department security official in Beirut “engaged in sexual assaults” with foreign nationals hired as embassy guards and the charge and that members of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s security detail “engaged prostitutes while on official trips in foreign countries” — a problem the report says was “endemic.”

Former State Department internal investigator Aurelia Fedenisn told CBS News, “We also uncovered several allegations of criminal wrongdoing in cases, some of which never became cases.”

Often times, other DSS agents were simply told to back off of investigations of high-ranking State Department members. Fedenisn told CBS that “hostile intelligence services” allow criminal behavior to continue.

In one such cover-up, investigators were told to stop probing the case of a U.S. ambassador who was suspected of patronizing prostitutes in a public park. The memo states that the ambassador was permitted to return to his post despite having, “routinely ditched…his protective security detail” in order to “solicit sexual favors from prostitutes.”

A draft of the Inspector General’s report on the performance of the Diplomatic Security Service, obtained by CBS News, states, “Hindering such cases calls into question the integrity of the investigative process, can result in counterintelligence vulnerabilities and can allow criminal behavior to continue.”

Fedenisn was part of the team that drafted the whistleblower report, and CBS News reports that two hours after the charges were reported, investigators from the State Department’s Inspector General showed up at her door.

A statement to CBS News states, “It goes without saying that the Department does not condone interference with investigation by any of its employees.”
