Illinois Cops Banned From Denny’s

Fox News: An Illinois police chief has banned his officers from a Belleville Denny’s Restaurant after a manager told five on-duty detectives they had to leave because one of them had a firearm.

“The Belleville Police Department is very disheartened by the lack of respect shown to on-duty sworn police officers, Capt. Don Sax said in a statement to Fox News. “Until further notice all on duty Belleville Police officers are banned from Denny’s Restaurant unless responding to an official call for service.

The incident occurred on New Year’s Day when five detectives were eating at the restaurant. A manager approached their table and told one of the detectives that she had to take her weapon out to her car or leave the restaurant. The detectives initially thought it was a joke, Sax said, noting that all of the officers had displayed their badges and several police radios were on the table.

(The manager) stated that he had a complaint from another customer about the weapon and she had to take the weapon outside or leave,” he said. The manager told the detectives that Denny’s only allows officers in uniform to carry weapons. The detectives said that wasn’t going to happen so they got up to leave.

Sax said the restaurant’s general manager eventually came over and said it was fine for the detectives to be in the restaurant. “At this point the detectives were very embarrassed and felt the situation was entirely too awkward for them to remain and all left the restaurant,” Sax said.

A spokesperson for Denny’s told Fox News told Fox News the restaurant manager made a mistake. They do allow both uniformed and non-uniformed officers to carry weapons in the restaurant. The spokesman said it was a case of miscommunication. They said the manager was trying to do the right thing after a diner had complained. Denny’s said they regret any misunderstanding.

A person complained because a detective had a weapon? Good grief…wonder if that person will complain when they have to call 911 and have an officer show up with a weapon? Madness!

  1. This country is going completly insane.Since when can’t law enforcement come in to any place with a firearm? This certainly not the country I grew up in!What is wrong with Denny’s?I agree with with the last sentence.Just plain MADNESS!!!

  2. Dennys is a Freak Show anyway,, have you ever been there after dark, so it should be expected that a local idiot would complain just because he can, and the idiots that work there would honor the stupid complaints just because the 1st idiot has a right to complain,, it gets worse, my friends, it only gets worse….

There are times when I seriously wonder at peoples commonsense. The Denny’s here never thought through the consequences of their actions. They were at a much less risk for robbery with the armed police presence and yet because someone was offended at the weapons they were carrying they chose to ask them to unarm. They never bothered to consider that unarmed police would be a magnet for those who wanted to harm them and therefore a magnet for increased violence to the resturant and the people within. They lose on all fronts now, publically they are made to look the fool, but worse than that they lose the revenue that they would have otherwise enjoyed. They also lose the protection they had, whether they realized it or not, by having the police on hand.

  4. It would have been hilarious had that complaining customer whipped out a gun and robbed the place right after the cops had left.

I’ll bet that possibility never even crossed that manager’s mind.

Then again, I’m guessing the manager was hired for reasons other than their qualifications, anyway.

  5. The customer that complained was probably an idiot Liberal who didn’t realize they were safer there than anywhere else at that point. The manager should have told him to leave.

  6. For some reason I think this goes well beyond the officers. It goes to the very root of the right of any and all law abiding citizens to bear arms. The fact that these police officers only underscores the asinine thinking of that that want to disarm merely because they don’t understand the significance of freedom coupled with an armed citizenry.

  7. Hey, all criminals in the Belleville IL area: the local Denny’s has no cops inside. Now is the time to make your move. Just FYI.

  8. Clark, and it says
“Until further notice all on duty Belleville Police officers are banned from Denny’s Restaurant unless responding to an official call for service.”
I’m just wondering just how long they will take at the donut shop they will have to go to first to kill some time before actually getting there. I mean they will be in a big rush. Just saying.. :D

  9. Oh yeah, they’ll respond to a call…veeeerrrryyyy slllooowwwlllyyy. Did they think of that or will it hit them on the first night, after-hours when they’re inundated w/ “drunk and disorderly” patrons some Friday or Saturday night?? I’ve been on both sides of THAT scene! We’ve caused actual $$ damage once, but mostly just a bunch of us aggravated anyone not as drunk as we were. (We’ve also been in ours at that time of the night, sometimes they’ll give you a headache, but our cops have never been discriminated against, so the trouble settles down “rather quickly”!) Gee, and our Denny’s is SOOOO close to Canteen Cantina, too, (supposedly one of the largest in the state, so they say), and they get a LARGE group of troublemakers every weekend! And there’s a bar, or more, in every town.

My 2nd ex was generally useless for most things, but one of his phrases was “It’s not what they’ll do TO you, it’s what they won’t do FOR you!” Uh huh! DEFINITE truth in that saying!

  10. i wouldn’t eat at that denneys either and would encourage others in that town to stop patronizing the establishment also. if i can’t take my weapon with me its not worth going in. remember the woman who watched her mother and father die in a resturant while her handgun was out in her car.

    • ixnayoo Great reminder and I just happen to be sitting on that story which I will post in a while. Having puter probs at the moment..LOL
