Military pack-mule robot: Creepy or cute?

DARPA or the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is an agency of the U.S. Department of Defense responsible for the development of new technologies for use by the military. DARPA has been responsible for funding the development of many technologies which have had a major effect on the world, including computer networking.

DARPA has been at work designing sophisticated military robots. The Legged Squad Support System (LS3) program just completed prototypes of  robotic “pack mules” that one day would carry gear for a squad of Marines or Army soldiers. The robots are able to get back up from a fall by itself, interpret verbal and visual commands, and autonomously follow people through rugged terrain.

Break thinks the robots’ ability to “follow the leader” are the “creepiest ever.”

I find them quite touching and cute. What about you?

  1. Oh yes, they are adorable!!!

  2. Thank you Dr. Eowyn for showing us these cute robots. I don’t think they are creepy at all.

  3. I’d love to have a couple to take hunting. I’ve been on a llama assisted hike on the John Muir trail once up in the High Sierras that was incredible! I would definitely suggest the designers give them a “face” of some kind, but I think they’re cool.

  4. Like all our great innovations, they’re only good when directed by good leaders. I’ll feel better about these things when the commander in chief is a man of honor and wisdom. Until then, (sorry Doc) I’m creeped out by these things.

  5. If used to help our soldiers, I’m for it.

  6. Why don’t they just bring back pack mules? They charge their own batteries with grass or whatever foliage is available, their vocal cords can be surgically removed for stealth and they are basically “hamburger on the hoof” for when the chow wagon doesn’t show up for a few weeks. Plus they can be used to negotiate with lovesick Muslim terrorists who have lost their goats.

  7. LOL – Can they be taught to mow grass?
