Our actions have consequences. Actor Andy Griffith is finding out the hard way.
About a month ago, Griffith appeared in an ad on cable TV to pimp for Obamacare. The ad was purchased by the Obama administration with $700,000 of taxpayers’ money.
The 84-year-old “folksy” Griffith was used in a transparent appeal to senior citizens. Poll after poll have shown seniors to be the demographic group most skeptical of Obamacare. Just over one-third believe ObamaCare allows for death panels or “allow a government panel to make decisions about end-of-life care for people on Medicare,” a Kaiser Family Foundation poll had found. Only 38% of seniors surveyed viewed the law favorably, while 46% viewed it unfavorably.
None other than the lefty FactCheck.org exposed the lie told by Griffith in the TV commercial: “the truth is that the new law is guaranteed to result in benefit cuts” for the 10 million seniors currently enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans.
Now, a Public Policy Polling (PPP) of North Carolina poll found that Andy Griffith’s favorability rating has plummeted in his home state. His rating in the state now stands at 44/22, giving the actor a net favorability of +22 — which is a 25-point decline from June of 2008 when Griffith was at a net +47 (56/9.)
PPP notes that “There’s not much doubt that it’s Griffith’s forays into politics, most recently in support of the health care bill, that are driving down his poll numbers. His 53% favorability with Democrats right now is only slightly down from 57% in the June 2008 poll. But with Republicans he’s dropped all the way from 57% to 35%. He’s only barely on positive ground with GOP voters, as 31% of them see him unfavorably.”
Speaking for myself, my regard for Griffith is radically altered. Now that I’ve seen his true unmasked face, I find him utterly repellent. I will never ever watch his shows again.
