Most Americans Against ILLEGAL Immigration

At a pro-illegal immigration rally in Arizona, a protester threatened violence against the police there

Thousands of people from around the country marched to the Arizona state Capitol yesterday, May 29, 2010, to protest the state’s new immigration law, SB 1070 — a law that vocal critics (notably Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano) could not be bothered to read.

Opponents of the law suspended their boycott against Arizona and bused in protesters from around the country. Organizers said the demonstration could bring in as many as 50,000 people. Supporters of Arizona organized a rally of their own Saturday evening at a baseball stadium in suburban Tempe, encouraging like-minded Americans to “buycott” Arizona by planning vacations in the state.

At the same time in San Francisco, there was a pro-illegal immigration protest against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks in their game against the Giants Saturday night. [Source]

Given all the huffing and puffing of the anti-Arizona mob, it is useful and important for us to know that a recent CNN Opinion Research Poll found a large majority of Americans supportive of laws like Arizona’s.

Between May 21 and 23, 2010, Opinion Research Company (hired by CNN) conducted a natonwide telephone poll of a sample of 1,023 adult Americans. The poll has a sampling error of plus/minus 3%. Here are the results relevant to this issue:

On Question #31: “Would you like to see the number of illegal immigrants currently in the country increased, decreased, or remain the same?”

76%: Decreased

21%: Remain the same

2%: Increased

1%: No opinion

On Question #32: (If the answer is “decreased” to Question #31) “Would you like to see the number of illegal immigrants decreased only a little, a lot, or would you like to see all illegal immigrants currently in the country removed from the United States?”

41%: Remove all

21%: Remain the same

20%: Decreased a lot

14%: Decreased a little

2%: Increased

2%: No opinion

On Question #35: “What should be the main focus of U.S. government in dealing with the issue of illegal immigration — developing a plan that would allow illegal immgrants who have jobs to become legal residents, or develop a plan for stopping the flow of illegal immigraiton into the U.S. and for deporting those already here?”

60%: Stop illegals/deport those here

38%: Allow to become legal residents

2%: No opinion.

But the responses to this next question makes it clear that Americans are NOT anti-foreign jingoists. It is ILLEGAL immigration that Americans oppose; Americans do not have a problem with immigration, i.e., LEGAL immigration!

On Question #33: “Would you like to see the number of legal immigrants currently in this country increased, decreased, or the same?”

65%: Remain the same.

11%: Decreased

23%: Increased

  1. The Washington Post,[72] Rajeev K. Goyle, of the Center for American Progress, a liberal Washington think tank, … …the cost of forcibly removing most of the nation’s estimated 10 million illegal immigrants is $41 billion a year.

Who will do the millions of poorly paid jobs that America depends on to feed it?

The homeless? I doubt it … half of the homeless people of America already have jobs… and I can’t see a recently unemployed bank manager picking oranges in California for 6 bucks an hour. So who will do the work? Or is America ready to pay $5 bucks each for an orange? or 15 for a bunch of grapes?

Ángel Martínez has done backbreaking work, harvesting asparagus, pruning grapevines, picking fruit, washed trucks, often working 70 hours a week.
He pays $2000 to social security and 450 for Medicare, which he can never receive.
Illegals pay 7 billion a year into the SS fund but will never get anything back.
When this issue is fully comprehended you can see why it’s not a good idea, especially now.

jy your comment reflects the usual ethnocentric liberal diatribe. The cost of not removing illegals by enforcing our immig. laws is several hundred million per year. As to the 10 dollar head of lettuce, the labor reflected in the retail price of produce is 6 to 10 percent. We can solve the agri. labor needs via a well monitored temp. guest worker prog. not leading to citizenship

  3. It is simple. Americans do not want immigration laws disobeyed-and there are many immigrants who have come into this country legally, my family included. There are many Hispanic and Latino immigrants who have come into this country legally. Obey the law!

  4. By the way,Eowyn, thank you so much for giving us this important poll information. It is very significant and noteworthy!

  5. There are plenty of people here that can do the work. Lets start off with all of those on welfare. No more something for nothing. There are plenty of people on welfare that are perfectly healthy and capable of getting out there and working. And besides, once all of the illegals are gone, millions of jobs will open up and the employers will just have to live with paying at least minimum wage. This is the right thing for the employers to do anyways for our country.
